Trance Mediums - by the Psychic Cynic

Trance Mediumship is something that I have always found interesting – even more so, transfiguration mediumship where the medium, in a trance, seems to produce a substance called ectoplasm from their body which can then ‘turn into’ the figure of a relative or loved one in the spirit realm.

interesting – even more so, transfiguration mediumship where the medium, in a trance, seems to produce a substance called ectoplasm from their body which can then ‘turn into’ the figure of a relative or loved one in the spirit realm.

I suppose one of the main reasons that this interests me so much is  that you very, very rarely hear of anyone these days who can do something which actually gives undeniable proof of an afterlife by producing this extroadinary level of psychic ability – after all, they do say that ‘seeing is believing’.

The question I then find that I have to ask myself is this:  ‘Why do we not have any mediums anywhere doing this kind of demonstration today?  Do we not have mediums doing this kind of demonstration because today’s technological advancements means that this would be impossible to ‘fake’?’  Was this type of mediumship, particularly famous within the Victorian culture, simply an elaborate parlour game afterall?’

On a recent visit to a ‘séance’, I was excited to discover that a display of transfiguration mediumship was to occur.  However, rather than the medium producing ectoplasm, this mediums face would be ‘taken over’ by the spirit coming through and those watching would be able to actually ‘see’ the face change and the spirit evolve.

Excitedly, I took my place and awaited my first opportunity of truly ‘seeing’ with my own eyes how this would occur.

"At best, it was interesting entertainment and at worst it was a cruel way to try and make people feel that they were not ‘worthy’ enough to see something happen leaving many people upset and a little distressed.

The job of anyone within this line of work is to take responsibility for what you are presenting.

How can we ever hope to change the beliefs of the ‘dyed-in-the-wool’ cynics if we within this work are prepared to roll out such utter rubbish?"

Psychic Cynic

All too often, people who believe in Psychic, Spiritual, Holistic & Mystic concepts are dismissed as gullible people taken for a ride by unethical fraudsters.  We don't believe that that is true for a vast majority of believers - and in fact, most can 'debate' confidently, believably and passionately - and this is what the Psychic Cynic is all about.  Spiritual Debate is healthy - and difficult questions SHOULD be asked and discussed.

The Psychic Cynic will present a compelling, strong & believable case AGAINST a particular belief or concept - and ask for all of you who believe in it to answer that case FOR that belief or concept.  It will certainly be interesting...after all, the Psychic Cynic is not one to give in easily... so, its time for you to decide. Do you believe For or Against...

The lights were turned off and an orange lamp was directed at the mediums face.  She was dressed all in black so that all that could be seen was her face (which with the orange hue of the lamp was already casting quite odd shadows!)

Through the next while, we sat transfixed as we awaited this ‘face changing’ to begin.  Suddenly somebody said that they could see the face changing to something else…and then another said that they could also see…  Try as I might, I could not see anything even remotely different on the medium at all.  In fact, my eyes were blurring slightly from staring at one thing for so long with that orange glow upon it.

At the end of the ‘demonstration’, it was very interesting that of the forty or so people that were there, around ten were convinced that they had seen something happen whilst thirty others were left slightly bemused by the whole proceedings.

For me, this demonstration raised more questions then it actually answered.  Why did only some see it and not all?  Did those who say they saw something only do so because they so desperately wanted to?  What about the scientifically proven phenomena known as ‘The Wallpaper Effect’?

Here’s an experiment for you to try and tell me how you get on.  Shine a lamp onto a wall and stare at one point of that wall for about five or ten minutes.  Without question, your eyes will show you that something is ‘appearing’ or changing shape!  This is actually the liquids behind your eyes moving themselves as you stare at one place for a period of time and is nothing more elaborate than that!!!  Were these people then simply experiencing ‘The Wallpaper Effect’?

On voicing my concerns and questions to the group assembled there, I was told that those who are cynical or are ‘switched off’ are less likely to experience it then those who believe.  I’ve heard this before – I think it was when I went for a tarot reading which cost me in excess of £50 for a mere twenty minutes of utter tripe.  When I mentioned this to the tarot reader, she told me that it was MY fault as I had not been open minded enough and not given her the correct energies (and needless to say she kept the £50!)  This kind of explanation for what and how somebody experiences something is wrong – and not fair.  It is not the responsibility of the person going to the reader or demonstration to ‘give’ their total belief and energies…and it is certainly not fair to blame them or make them believe it is ‘their fault’ for the inadequacies of the medium or reader.
However, I digress.  For me, the one thing that convinces me that what we witnessed was simply no more than a Victorian Parlour Game for the twenty first century is this:-

Of all of the people that ‘came through’ to that medium on that night and apparently ‘changed’ her face – not one of them was recognized by anyone within the room and not one of the messages was a concrete and accurate message for the recipient.

We were told how much ‘energy’ it takes Spirit to come forward in this way – well, surely if you are going to make that much of an effort you are going to at least make sure it is worth your while and get the correct message to the correct person?

At best, it was interesting entertainment and at worst it was a cruel way to try and make people feel that they were not ‘worthy’ enough to see something happen leaving many people upset and a little distressed.

After many, many years within this field, I have yet to come across one single medium who has been able to perform trance mediumship with even an iota of accuracy or physical proof.  Considering the abundance of those out there claiming to have mediumistic abilities – why is it that the one thing mediums could do that could absolutely prove without any doubt that there is an afterlife is the one thing that no medium today seems able to do…

…Have Spirit changed so much from Victorian Days when this kind of demonstration was so common?  Or have we changed so much that we know we could simply never get away with fooling people like that today?
