The runes were seen as powerful aids to divination and magic, able to influence the forces of nature and work charms of fertility and healing.
Although the actual number of runes in the alphabet varied at different times and locations, gradually the twenty-four Anglo-Saxon futhark became the standard. These runes are grouped into three Aetts, or sets of eight.
The first Aett is Freyrs (or Freya’s) Aett, representing Fertility and Plenty. The second Aett is named after Hagal, the elemental force of hail and storm, and Tyr’s Aett is linked to the Norse warrior God, Tyr or Tiwaz.

Origins of Runes
The origins of the runes in Western Europe can be traced back to about 1300 BC.
Carved into stone monuments or engraved on metalwork, these pictographs of animals and religious and fertility symbols later evolved into what we know today as Runes (from the Gothic ‘Runa’, meaning mystery or secret).
